Backus Property Management
Backus specializes in individual attention and personal service. Owners may customize their services to reflect the involvement they wish to have, and the level of personal attention they require.
Managing throughout Monterey County, including Salinas, Monterey, Carmel, Pebble Beach, Seaside, Gonzales, Soledad, Greenfield, King City, Hollister and Watsonville.
Michele, Cindy and Jana are each direct managers of their own portfolios. In addition, Michele is the office manager who oversees all day-to-day operations. Remaining staff members are Daisy Puente, Assistant for Michele, Sally Ann Mejia, the company bookkeeper; Christina PykaHuerta and Celeste Serrano; Administrative Assistants who help with marketing and other administrative functions, plus are both bilingual. Daniel Pinto, Michael Backus and Will Backus, who assist with a variety of administrative duties.
Our office phones are always answered live during office hours. If the person you ask for is not available, one of us will try to help, take a message, or direct you to a cell phone if necessary. All calls are returned within one business day and generally much sooner. Emails are also returned on the same day, during office hours. Our emergency line is available 24/7.
Our clients are very important to us. We will often ask: what can we do to make this process easier for you?
This is a unique approach. We are the only company in Monterey County willing to manage your property "Your Way”.
Backus Properties – Sales
Backus Properties has been in the business of doing real estate sales as well as property management from the beginning. We don't advertise for outside business and instead we focus on our current owners. Bill Backus is responsible for all sales activity.

Bill Backus » President and Broker Associate
Bill was born and raised in Monterey County and is a graduate of Salinas High School and Chico State University. He has been involved in Real Estate for the past 21 years and is an active member of the Monterey County Association of Realtors and National Association of Residential Property Managers. Bill has a stellar reputation in property sales.
Michele Backus » Property Manager, Licensed Real Estate Agent
Michele is a California native and a graduate of Chico State University. She has been associated with Backus Properties for 15 years, starting part time in an administrative position and advancing to property management. She became licensed eight years ago and now manages the office and the largest portfolio with great finesse. Truthfully, her assistant Daisy deserves kudos. Theirs is the office you will see when you walk in the door and Daisy is bilingual.

Cindy Vargas » Property Manager, Licensed Real Estate Agent
Cindy was born and raised in Salinas and is a graduate of Salinas High School. She obtained her Real Estate License in 2006. She came to Backus Properties from Smith Property Management and brings with her over 20 years of experience in both residential and commercial property management. Cindy specializes in commercial leasing including Triple Net calculations and budget planning for all our commercial owners. She has been an active member of the National Association of Residential Property Managers since 2009.

Jana Whitlock » Property Manager and Licensed Real Estate Agent
Jana was born in Spain and move to Salinas when she was five years old. She is a graduate of Salinas High School. She attended the College of Notre Dame in Belmont CA, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and obtained her master’s degree in social work at Fresno State University. She speaks fluent Spanish. She obtained her Real Estate License in 2014 and joined Backus Properties in 2022

Sally Backus » Managing Broker
Sally was born and raised in Monterey County and is a graduate of Notre Dame High School and Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo CA. She has over 48 years of experience in Real Estate and Property Management. She is an active member in a variety of local associations, particularly the National Association of Residential Property Managers (NARPM). She has attained the Master Property Manager designation and was the 65th person in the country to do so. She was also a certified instructor for NARPM in the field of Property Management and was a frequent speaker nationwide in her fields of expertise. An important part of her job is being current on new and changing laws.
